The role of technological tools in the academic motivation of college students: a systematic review
Main Article Content
Abstract
The expansion of technology in higher education contrasts with the scattered nature of the evidence regarding its relationship to academic motivation. The objective was to analyze the role of technological tools in the academic motivation of college students. A systematic review with a qualitative approach was conducted, following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, through searches in Scopus, SciELO, Web of Science, Redalyc, Dialnet, and Google Scholar. Of the 30 records identified, 13 studies published between 2022 and 2026 were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results showed that gamification, virtual platforms, and digital educational resources were the most commonly used tools, associated with greater interest, participation, engagement, autonomy, and self-efficacy, as well as with intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. However, more frequent use did not necessarily lead to greater motivation. These findings suggest that the benefits depend on pedagogical integration, digital competencies, and teacher support; furthermore, the predominance of correlational designs limits causal inferences. It is concluded that technological tools can strengthen motivation when they are part of student-centered planning, although longitudinal and comparative research is needed to determine the durability and scope of their effects.
