Treatment and prognosis of partial peripheral paralysis in adults
Main Article Content
Abstract
Peripheral facial paralysis represents a clinical challenge due to the lack of consensus on available and accessible treatments for the adult population. This condition, with an estimated frequency of 25 to 35 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, can have various causes, with Bell's palsy being the most common presentation. In light of this problem, a systematic review of the literature published between 2016 and 2023 was conducted using the PRISMA methodology, applying rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria. Databases such as PubMed and Tripdatabase were consulted, which allowed the identification of pharmacological and rehabilitation treatment options. The early administration of corticosteroids within the first 72 hours to optimize recovery and reduce sequelae was highlighted. Similarly, physical therapy was considered relevant as a support for functional improvement, although the need for further research to support its efficacy with a high level of evidence was evident. Determinant prognostic factors were identified, such as the initial degree of paralysis and early response to management. The study highlights the importance of establishing uniform guidelines and systematic follow-up to improve the prognosis and quality of life of those affected.
